A first aid kit is kept at whichever venue we are using for Club training nights, for Member's use.

Signs of Attack

Difficulty in breathing, with very prolonged breathing-out phase.

There may also be:

Wheezing as the casualty breathes

Difficulty speaking and whispering

Distress and anxiety

Blue tinge to lips, earlobes and nailbeds.

Cough

What to do

Keep the casualty comfortable and don't crowd them

Reassure them all will be well

Sit them slightly forward and support the upper body by leaning the arms on a firm surface (e.g. the back of a chair)

Allow the casualty to use their inhaler. They may need help finding it. They should use their INHALER  (usually has a BLUE cap)

Encourage the casualty to breath slowly. Keep them quiet.

If the inhaler has no effect after 5 minutes or the attack gets worse TELEPHONE 999

NOTE: As a precaution every asthmatic should carry their INHALER with them when they go for a run. PREVENTER INHALERS (usually with WHITE or BROWN caps are not effective treatment for asthma attacks.
