The Welsh Castles Relay 2006 (page 2)

(Continued from The Welsh Castles Relay first page)

A hearty evening meal saw the troops' spirits revive rapidly (although one young soul had too much spirit, and was regretting it on his very hot leg the next day...)

... while Tony Jefferies prepared for Sunday's first leg (leg 11) in the traditional manner.  As in previous years, your photographer made his excuses for not covering the leg (12.3 miles starting at 7am, from Newtown to Llanbadarn Fynydd, which Tony covered in 1:25:19)

Sunday morning saw Robyn doing a great job keeping the children entertained

Steve MacDonald was also up early on the Sunday morning, running the 11.2 miles for Leg 12, from Llanbadarn Fynydd to Crossgates in 1:21:10.  A red kite hovered overhead as he finished - not sure whether this was an omen or not.

Colin Marrs insists that there is no substance to the rumours about his use of performance-enhancing sports drinks, but here he was caught in the act.  Anyway, Colin covered the 10.6 mile Leg 13 from Crossgates to Builth Wells in 1:17:50.

The 11.0 mile Leg 14 may not be the longest of the weekend, but it is certainly one of the hardest.  In this photo, Chris Palmer is only half-way up the hill!  In the end, he ran 1:18:51 for this leg.

This was the scene awaiting the runners at the top of the hill - does anyone know the significance of the red flag?

John Collier ran a very impressive 4 miles on the downhill Leg 15 from the Drovers Arms to Brecon.  Unfortunately, for the rest of the 12.4 mile leg, the heat and the previous nights refreshments rather caught up with him, although 1:26:51 was still respectable in the heat.

Clive Attwood had the short, but not sweet, 9.0 mile uphill Leg 16 from Brecon to the Beacons Reservoir ( 1:04:03).  After a relatively flat start, the course climbs for 6 miles without a break with the sun at its hottest.

Linda O’Shaughnessy ran back down the hill (and up, and down, etc.) on the 9.2 Leg 17  from the Beacons Reservoir to Cyfarthfa Castle (1:10:49)

Keith Hill then had the glamorous 9.1mile Leg 18 from Merthyr to the Abercynon recycling centre (1:05:46).  Your photographer investigated the possibility of recycling his legs, without success.

Declan McManus took us through the throngs of spectators on the 10.4 mile Leg 19 from Abercynon to  Caerphilly Castle (1:23:01) (cleverly edited out to give you this clear photograph).
Finally, as is now traditional, the photographer completely failed to catch up with our Leg 20 runner, Mike Harris, on the 10.4 mile leg from Caerphilly Castle to Cardiff Castle (1:14:49), so here he is outside the castle at the finish.

"Pace-maker to the Stars" Dave Perkins was one of many celebrities awaiting the arrival of the squad.

Another highly enjoyable weekend!
