The Welsh Castles Relay 2006 (10-11th June 2006)

A 210 mile relay race is not to be entered into lightly, so we were probably off to a bad start on Friday night.  After another idyllic drive up through mid-Wales (once the less-than-idyllic traffic of the M5/M6 junction on a Friday afternoon had been overcome), and comfortably ensconced in the Bangor Youth Hostel, Trish did her best to prevent the gravity of the task from sinking in.

At Caernarfon Castle our women's team manager, Robyn Edwards, set out the her stall at the start of Leg 1 (luckily she was dragged off to run the race, while the others were left to put it away again).  She went on to finish as first lady to reach  Penygroes after 9.1 miles.
Jullian B-G was inspired by this performance to produce one of the best warm-ups of his life, on Leg 2, 10.7 miles from  Penygroes to Criccieth Castle.

On the long, hilly 12.1 miles from Criccieth Castle to Maentwrog, Rob Gordon showed that his long struggle with injury was at last behind him, and strode out majestically with the fastest clocking by a Harrier on this leg.

Trish Robson found time to share a joke with her fellow competitors, before pushing on to win the lady vet's yellow jersey on the 9.4 mile Leg 4 from Maentwrog to Harlech Castle (no male voice choir to meet her, unfortunately)

Marathon des Sables' survivor Jay Waller found his 9.6 mile Leg 5 from Harlech Castle to Barmouth a bit of a sprint, but Wendy Tippett took the 10.7 mile Leg 6 from Barmouth to Dolgellau in her stride.

Track runner Malcolm White found the mountainous 9.75 mile Leg 7 from Dolgellau to Dinas Mawddwy about 8.7 miles too long for his liking, but at least he didn't have to run it the other way around.

Rod Jones finished 3rd overall on the 11.2 mile Leg 8 from  Dinas Mawddwy to Foel (but unfortunately outran the cameraman), while Richard Adams breezed the 8.6 mile Leg 9 from Foel to Llanfair Caereinion.

Mike Clark was preparing to use his karate skills on the dreaded half marathon Leg 10 from Llanfair Caereinion to  Y Drenewydd, but in the end they weren't needed as his drinks order was waiting for him at the bar in Rhayader
