E-News
Dear all
Welcome to a special Christmas issue of e-news! I'd
like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very
Merry Christmas! Lots to report on, including both
individual and team success in the Avon XC Champs, a
reindeer run, a run round the trails of the Forest of
Dean and an absolute cracker of a race over at Weston
last Sunday. Not to mention last night's Weston Prom -
which thanks to WestonAC finally joining the technical
era this season, we have results for already!!!
Due to my having a well earned break the next issue of
e-news will not be until Week commencing January 11th,
where we will be back bigger and better, with news of
all the Christmas period running activity!
It's been a great year of running and I've really
enjoyed many of the great days out we've had as a
club. Obviously the big team events, like the Road
Relays and the recent Avon XC champs were special days
- but for me being part of the winning teams during
the TACH series in the summer and the Mells 7 were
particularly cool. When Rich Bloss got his hands on a
trophy at Mells and said "That's brilliant, this
is the first trophy I've won for running" -
to me that's what road running is all about - let's
have more of it in 2010!
Race
Results
Five races to report on: Gwent League (inc Avon XC
Champs), the Forest of Dean Trail Series, the Reindeer
Run, the Christmas Cracker and the Weston Prom!
One I was
meant to report on a while back, but due to my sieve like memory, I
forgot! Which is a pity, as I can report on a race win for Julian Hatcher,
who completed the 15.4km course in a stonking time of 54.04!!! In the
ladies race, Laura Tanna and Jane Thornton completed the course in around
1 hour and 25 minutes - giving them a solid workout ahead of the Christmas
party season!
Gwent League (inc. Avon XC Championships) - Taunton
The third of this season's Gwent League races was held on a 'traditional'
XC course of mud, hills and long grass near the picturesque Hestercombe
House in Taunton! The race also incorporated the Avon XC Championships,
with the club having high hopes of success in both Mens and ladies events!
The ladies race was first off and the team were led home by Robyn Golding,
who finished 12th in the main race, but picked up the Bronze medal in the
Avon champs. Sophie Voller was 2nd home in 17th, with Debbie Marsden and
Debbie Cleary close together in 31st and 35th respectively. Shannon Jones,
Wendy Tippett, Zoe Dixon and Vicky Jones were next home for Westbury in
47th, 51st, 54th and 61st. Then the 3rd wave of Harriers: Gill Jones,
Isabel Duckworth and Heather Stacey were next home, closely followed by
Marilyn Palmer and Sandra Bailey-Gard - a great team performance with 14
Harriers out there, finishing 1st on the day in the Gwent League, and 3rd
in the Avon Champs!
Our mens team went even better - winning the team prize in the Avon
championships! Led home by John Terry in 45th place overall (and 6th in
the championship race), he was closely followed by Chris Palmer 50th,
Gregg Ward 51st, Rick Wallis 55th, Dan Studley 63rd, Steve Adams 86th and
Colin Johnson in 97th completing the team of 6. Just behind Colin, was
Anthony Ballance and Jullian Bailey-Gard Jnr in 98th and 99th place
respectively. Terry Jewell-Davies was 125th and Clive Attwood 136th, Tony
Jefferies was 156th and a big shout to Karl Dunn who finished 160th,
despite suffering two nasty shocks at the hands of a farmer's electric
fence! Phil Court was 166th, Jullian Bailey-Gard Snr 169th, Geraint
Torrington 171st and Mike Harris 216th. Rich Bloss 223 and Julian Wilson
236th completed a mens squad of 19 - well done all! Individually, Rick
Wallis was the Avon mens vets champions, with Colin Johnson and Anthony
Ballance both picking up medals in the vets category - Anthony I have your
medal - so ask me for it in the new year!!!
In the junior races, the club was again well supported - U.13 Boys James
Skelton 9th and Jake Bevan 34th - U.15 Boys Kane Lee 21st, Anton Williams
22nd - U.17 Men Brett Halliwell won the event, with Felix McGrath 14th,
Tyrone James 17th, Jon Barlow 25th and Doug Hopkins 27th! U.13 Girls Poppy
Thompson came an excellent 3rd, Emma Taylor 27th, Sophie Nash 28th and Zoe
Gould 29th, Beth Watkins 36th. U.15 Girls - Iris McNeill 10th, Kelly Leat
12th, Abi Johnston 20th and Chloe Chapman 36th. U. 17 Girls - Zoe Barber
10th, Emily Fitzhugh 11th, Rebecca Barlow 13th. Well done everyone!
Otterton Reindeer Run
The Christmas themed Otterton Reindeer run, saw Geraint Torrington donning
a pair of antlers, to complete the 10k trail course. He didn't disappoint
the masses, finishing 15th in a time of 42.59! Well done Geraint!
Wyvern Christmas Cracker
Who's bright idea was it to arrange one of the most popular 10ks in the
region, the day after the Christmas party? Anyhow, it wasn't enough to
stop some great performances from the Westbury team. Making a rare
appearance these days in the white and blue, was Rich Collinson, who
finished 6th in 35.16! Hot on his heels was Gregg Ward, who finished 11th
in 35.54. Ray Hooper ran 39.02, with Hamid Khan 39.37 and Terry
Jewell-Davies 40.26. Lizzy Smith was first lady home for the Harriers in
41.39, with Debbie Cleary second in 43.21, just holding off Dean Thornton
in 43.36! Matt Lee-Charnock ran 45.26, Gill Jones 46.26 and Sandra Price
48.13. David Baber 48.25, Judy Knights 48.26 and Hayley Johnson 50.10!
Emily Walsh 50.47, the list continues!!! Roger Long 51.39, Jane Goodwin
52.21, Eirian Thornton 53.38 and Linda O'shaughnessy 55.47. Next home was
Helen Cook in 56.24, Richard Hughes in 59.39, Dianne Heys in 1.00.24 and
Kim Ingleby in 1.08.21. Wow - what a turn out and great festive running
guys!!!
Weston Prom 5m
The weather turned freezeritis for the runners at
December's Prom. A change in course due to the ongoing
building works on the prom, merely added to the
excitement. Despite him meant to be taking things
easy, John Terry was first home for the Harriers,
finishing in 29.42 for 12th place, with the remainder
of the scoring men's team made up by Graham Clark,
25th in 31.23, Phil Court 46th in 32.58 and Jullian
Bailey-Gard Snr 67th in 34.22. Leading home our ladies
was Isabel Duckworth in 38.28, followed by Andrew
Gibbons in 39.54, Richard Hughes in 41.20, Jane
Thornton in 42.15, Eirian Thornton in 42.19, Roger
Long in 42.55 and Sandra Bailey-Gard in 54.08 - well
done to all of you!
Training
Chris
Elson will be running a structured session next
Tuesday down at Coombe Dingle and then again on
Wednesday 30th of December at 11am, starting at
Stoke Lodge
Race
Calendar
Here
is a list of forthcoming events where I am aware of
Westbury participation (or where Westbury runners
can 'easily' get to!) bold indicates
a club championship event. I have put in brackets
where I am aware of there being a team prize
associated with the race. I am happy to co-ordinate
runners who might be thinking about doing races
where prizes are up for grabs to ensure we have
sufficient numbers taking part! I'll update November
races in the next issue!
