News

Apologies for the lack of a newsletter in September and the briefness of this one, but it’s been a busy time of late and unfortunately work commitments and nappy changing have taken priority over newsletters.

If you have any articles that you’d like to see in the newsletter, please forward them on to newsletter@westburyharriers.co.uk.

Ladies 80th Anniversary celebration

Over 100 people turned out for the recent celebration.

Master of ceremonies Dave Perkins kept the evening running well with speeches from President Peter Griffin, Lady President Pat Gallagher and other distinguished guests.

It was good to see so many people at the event who have represented Westbury Harriers with distinction over the years. We can boast of 34 full internationals that have represented the club.

Floren Scrafton received the Syd Pow Sportsmanship award from Gloria Pow on the night.

A massive thanks has to go to President Peter Griffin for organising the event. It really wouldn’t have happened without him.

Roll on 2024 and our 100th anniversary!

Hair help needed

You may remember from the last newsletter that Jullian Bailey-Gard (Junior) was seeking some help on what to do with his hair. The following tips were received:

“I think a shortish cut leaving a long bit at the back for a plait”

“Keep it as it is so we can continue laughing”

“Get a droopy moustache and some tight shorts & then audition for the next 118 advert!”

“You’re kidding me, it’s a bloke??”

“I thought it was Jesus”

If you think you can offer Jullian some much needed hair advice please get in touch with him at sort_my_hair_out@westburyharriers.co.uk

Club Championships

The long overdue results of the 2007/8 club championships will be announced at the November club supper.

Please accept our apologies for the delay, mainly down to verifying the results and getting a few mismatches. We wouldn’t want to give the prizes to the wrong people…

Forthcoming 2008/9 championship events are highlighted in the fixtures section below.

Please note the Wyvern Christmas Cracker sells out early every year. If you want to do this run – ENTER NOW!

Race Results

The race results for club members are in the process of being available on the website and will not appear in the newsletter.

To help speed this process, if anybody has experience of using php and MySql please get in touch with Geraint Torrington.

Running injuries?

Hurrah! After 5 years slog Gill has made it and qualified as an osteopath.  Running has been in decline during her studies, but she hopes to be back training more regularly with the club again (watch out Marilyn!).  For those with aches and pains, Gill practices at The Family Practice, 116 Gloucester Road, Bishopston. Saturday morning appointments available from the end of September. For an appointment call the Family Practice on 0117 9446968 or for an informal chat call Gill on 0117 9140179. For those who don’t know, osteopathy uses gentle stretching, mobilising and manipulative techniques to facilitate the healing process.

East African Adventure

Hi, this may be of interest to some of your members...

My name is Tom Sutton and along with my Dad we run East African Adventure. We specialise in trekking and walking holidays in Tanzania and Kenya, climbing Kilimanjaro, Mt Kenya and Mt meru, and lower level walks in other areas of African wilderness (including safari's). I am a keen runner, and as such one of our newest itineraries is for the Kilimanjaro Marathon. On March the 1st 2009 is the 7th official running of the event, which last year attracted roughly 1,000 competitors to the full and half marathon distances from East Africa and all over the world.

From Thursday the 26th February - Tuesday 3rd March we are running the first organised trip from the UK to take part in this unique marathon which is held at the bottom (phew!) of one of the most iconic mountains in the world, experiencing local sights and culture, via coffee and banana plantations! Our carefully designed itinerary includes enough time to relax beforehand, a Game drive with canoeing experience in Arusha National Park to spot some of the African wildlife and of course entry to the Kilimanjaro Marathon/ Half Marathon, all the while staying in one of the most comfortable lodges in the area. For more information please click on the below link to the Kilimanjaro Marathon trip page on our website,

http://eastafricanadventure.com/trips/kili_marathon1.html

If this sounds like the sort of holiday/ challenge some of your members would be interested in I would be very grateful if you could pass on any details about the trip please.  If you had an e-newsletter then please consider a brief mention about the trip and a link to our site. I wonder if you'd be so kind as to include a link to our site from your links section too please? Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing from some of your members, and maybe even running with them in the shadow of Kili next march (because I'm doing it too!)

 Thanks,

 Tom Sutton

Sleepwalker

Dear Club Officials from Bath / Bristol,

This is an exciting event, near to you, and should appeal to some of your more intrepid members. I'm pleased to say that the Sleepwalker event (18.6 miles) is on for the 29th of November at 18.00, still from Talybont on Usk (Henderson Hall), Powys and with some exciting new changes this year. With a strong team from Les Croupiers already signed up and expecting Jules Carter to defend his record, we're anticipating a good strong field and some great racing.

This is the second SLEEPWALKER (the only night race in the TRA calendar), and we have an even tougher route for you than last year! Suitable for all experienced trail, fell and XC runner who are confident at map reading. If you've tried the various 'challenge' events why not try this for size? It's out in the wilds, it's November, and it's at night - challenge enough? The Sleepwalker takes in many aspects of the Brecon Beacons National Park - undulating through mature forests and traversing wild and barren hills and moor. This year the course will be less rocky but wetter, and fell running shoes or trail running shoes with a good grip are recommended. It will still be 100% runnable, and fast times can be anticipated if the weather is kind. Map reading is required and although key areas will be marked you should consider this to be a self sufficient race. There will be marshal vehicles on the course at approximately 8 and 12 miles able to render emergency assistance. Mandatory kit is required: fell or trail shoes, headtorch, spare batteries waterproof top and trousers, warm hat, gloves, whistle and survival bag. Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team will once again be providing Comms and safety cover for us, so spare a thought for the volunteers (and SARDA dogs) out on the hills to make this happen. Last year you donated £250 to CBMRT through entry fees - Thank You. Competitors must be over 18 to compete in The Sleepwalker.

Entries are via www.runnersworld.co.uk

Anyone requiring map reading refresher training is welcome to contact Duncan the organiser at www.northridgeadventure.co.uk or phone 07979 691989.

I speak for all the helpers in saying that we enjoyed ourselves a lot last year, and look forwards to welcoming many new runners to a great night of trail-racing at the Sleepwalker in 2008.

Hope to see some of your club members there,

Jay

Edinburgh Marathon

Dear Club Secretary

Please pass this information to all your club members, as we have made important changes to the entry system for the 2009 Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon. The main difference is that we have no ballot this year and entries are on a first come first served basis until we reach 11,500 entries or 15th January 2009, whichever is soonest.

Running Club members will not be guaranteed their entry after 15th January 2009.

To ensure your runners get a place please ask them to enter the marathon before we reach 11,500 entries or 15th January 2009, whichever is soonest. www.edinburgh-marathon.co.uk

We are offering free entry to British sub 2:40 males and sub 3:00 females. Free entry also if you have run a sub 73 min (male) or sub 1:25 (female). You need to have run below these times after the 1st January 2007.

Improvements for 2009 Marathon.

·         Changes to the start and finish areas give more space to runners/supporters.

·         Goody bag. We are replacing our cotton finishers t-shirt with a technical Asics running t-shirt.

·         There will not be a compulsory EXPO for 2009. All running packs (timing chip, running number, final competitor instructions) will be posted out to UK runners. The compulsory Expo will be replaced with a pre race party/Ceilidh (mini EXPO) in the city centre.

·         We will have more shuttle buses for spectators and runners and are also introducing other changes to make the shuttle buses a more efficient service.

To ensure your runners get a place please ask them to enter the marathon before we reach 11,500 entries or 15th January 2009, whichever is soonest.

 Kind Regards

 Harry Moore
