Run for the Children

The Let's Get Active Event took place on Saturday 14th June. It got off to a slow start, but the estimated numbers were in the region of 2500 – 3000 people  - not all running!!!  As it was the first time this event has been organised this was a fantastic result.  A survey was carried out at the event and the feedback was very positive. From an organisational point of view, the day ran extremely smoothly and that is thanks to your cooperation and help on the day. So thank you to all parents and other helpers who made this event a success.

Mmmm, curry

The social arm of the club had a successful curry evening the other month with around 18 people enjoying a spicy evening meal.

Many tried their hand at some athletics afterwards, but their performances will not stand as records as they were wind assisted!

UK School Games

Do you want to be involved in what is one of the South West region’s major sporting events this year?

Do you want to be part of a fun and engaging atmosphere?

Do you want to be a volunteer at the
UK School Games 2008?

Plans are now finalised to find a 350-strong volunteer team of all ages to help deliver the

2008 UK School Games in Bristol and Bath.

The UK School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age. Each of the nine sports are combined into a four-day Games environment designed to replicate the feel of major events such as the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The UK School Games seeks to create an inspirational and motivational setting which encourages more young people to take part and succeed in sport.

One of the themes of the UK School Games is to create high quality opportunities for both young people and adults to volunteer at what is a high profile event and also leave as trained and experienced volunteers with a great set of key skills that will be transferable and attractive to all employees.

·         You will receive kit for the use at the event which can be kept afterwards

·         Refreshments including lunch will be provided each day to Volunteers

·         Volunteers not on shift will be able to access all other venues during the Games as spectators

·         At the end the UK School Games there will be a volunteer reward and recognition evening where you will receive your certificate of attendance and recognition of your involvement while celebrating all of your achievements during the Games.

For those volunteers aged 16 + you will also have the following further opportunities:-

·         You will receive quality assured training which will include a recognised Level 2 qualification in Volunteering; this will be completed over the training sessions and over the course of the Games.

·         You will also benefit from attending the Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Child Protection workshop which is valid for 3 years.

All Volunteers will be required to commit to the days highlighted for your sport (detailed below), and also the following:

·         Attend UKSG’s Volunteer Training for the equivalent of 3 days prior to the Games (depending on age). These dates are 12th & 13th July (for those 16+) and an orientation day on the 2nd August (for all to attend).

·         Undertake an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check for over 18s or a reduced screening if you are a younger volunteer

·         Attend the relevant child welfare training for your job

If you would like more information please go to the UK School games website – http://www.ukschoolgames.com/

Athletics Volunteers

Saturday 30th – Sunday 31st August

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with the Athletics event, and to undertake specific roles for this. We are looking for volunteers aged between 12 – 16 years to help within the following roles:-

Kit Carriers (30 needed each day)
Result Runners (6 needed each day)

For each of these roles we are also looking for a handful of adults aged 18 years + to act as a supervisor to a small group of young volunteers during the day. This adult must be CRB checked and have attended a Safeguarding and Protecting Children course within the last 3 years.

If you are interested and are available to help with any of these roles please can you complete the attached application form and return to Lisa Perryman at;

Enhanced performance?

There’s been lots of talk about drugs in athletics lately, but I’m not sure if this story has been big news http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics/7469509.stm

What’s happening in the South West athletics region?

Club Championships

The club championships are nearing their completion and it’s tight at the top of both the men’s and women’s tables. The only fixture left that people can take part in is the Bridge Inn 5K Summer Series.

The championship committee - Tamsin Elson, Dean Thornton and Geraint Torrington – would like to get your feedback on the championships. What worked well? What can be done differently? Should other races can be added, if so which ones? Should some races be taken away? Should the format change? Please get in touch with them so that there is enough time to think about and implement any changes.

I f changes are to be made, then we need the feedback ASAP so that there is time to review and implement any changes and to allow people to enter some of the early races.

The results below are provisional and they will need to be verified.

GWR Mob Match 10K 11-Jul-08

Unfortunately we lost our trophy this year to a very strong Clevedon team. They managed to mobilise a lot of their good runners and were just too strong for us on the night. Our team was missing some of the club’s faster ladies as they were away on an intensive hydration course that weekend otherwise known as Tamsin’s hen weekend.

Whilst it was disappointing from a team perspective there were PBs for
Andy Yuill, Wendy Tippett, Rich Collinson and Rod Naughalty.

Clive Holleran made the trip up from Plymouth to help out the team and with a time of 36:52 you’re more than welcome to pop up any time you want.

Many thanks to everybody who turned out for the club. Next year we’ll have to get our trophy back!

Track results

Floren Scrafton seems to be improving each race with Zoe Barber also improving her times regularly. Floren says that her times are improving because it’s her first season on the track. True, but you’re hardly hanging around out there as a current ranking of 4th in the UK for 1500M shows.
