Member of the monthThis is a new initiative started by the club. We made a profit from the Christmas Party and will distribute the proceeds over the year by giving £25 of vouchers to a member of the month. The member of the month will be decided by the committee at the monthly meeting. The member of the month can be for pretty much any reason, an excellent personal performance, going the extra mile to help out, making you feel better on a training run when you were feeling like you could just stop. Anything goes. If you have somebody you’d like to nominate for a member of the month see a member of the committee and put your nomination forward or email secretary@westburyharriers.co.uk. The committee meets on the first Friday of every month.
The April member of the month is………… Roger Long - Roger has been spending long hours down the library digging out any newspaper clipping that he finds about Westbury Harriers in the 1950s. They’ll start appearing in the newsletter soon. NewsVenue change for Thursday nightsAt the AGM a motion was put forward for all training groups to meet at Coombe Dingle throughout the year for the effort sessions. This motion was unanimously passed by those present. So from Thursday, May 7th training will be at Coombe Dingle and not at Blaise Castle. Training on Monday evenings will continue to be from Blaise Castle in the summer months and Coombe Dingle in the winter. Why has this change been made? Currently the younger athletes already use Coombe Dingle throughout the summer months. This causes a problem for some members who drop their children off at Coombe Dingle, then go to Blaise to join the senior groups. They then have to trek back from Blaise to Coombe Dingle to pick their child up. This has often meant that the coaches of the children have to wait behind for a long time after training to wait for parents to pick their children up. Also the surface at Coombe Dingle is better for speed work that at Blaise Castle. And for the people who’ll say that the hills in Blaise are great to train on; it’s only a short jog away from Coombe Dingle…
Running and FluRunning and Flu do not mix. Never mind whether it is swine flu, bird flu, Hong Kong flu or an annoying little number that you picked up from the kids. One of the consequences of flu is that it weakens your muscles, and, since your heart is a muscle, if you run or race with flu then you run the risk of serious heart damage or worse. In fact, when you hear of a casualty at a big race, the most likely explanation is that they were suffering from flu. If you have a sudden cough or fever, unexpectedly aching muscles or stiff joints, chills, headache, unusual tiredness or lack of appetite, then treat yourself to a few days off. Of course it goes without saying that you wouldn’t train if you suffered from vomiting or diarrhoea anyway. And while sneezing is a common symptom of colds and hay fever, if it occurs in conjunction with these other symptoms then you might be sneezing flu virus over all your friends! Please don’t expect your coach or group leader to be a medical expert. If you are worried that you might be ill then contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647, or visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk where they have a handy symptom checker.
London MarathonCongratulations to all the club members who recently completed the London Marathon. Charlie Hobbs was aiming for sub 3 and was on target until mile 21 when the wheels started to come off a bit. A 6.08 mile at 19 probably didn’t help! Jane Thornton took 10 minutes off her PB and Vanessa Smith also set a new PB. But Emma D’Alton fared a little worse. Here’s a little extract from Facebook “I didn't hit the wall ...... I felt really ill and proceeded to vomit everywhere including down myself..... Had been ill last Wednesday .”

Club ChampionshipPlease note: The Oldbury 10 was originally included in the 2008/9 championship as it’s provisional date was August 23rd. This event has now been moved to October 4th and will not form part of the 2008/9 championship. The races that have counted towards the table below are; Victoria Park 4, Bridge Inn Winter Series, Gloucester 10, Gloucester 20, Christmas Cracker, Stroud Half Marathon, Ironwood Challenge, Hogweed Hilly Half, Gwent League, Frenchay 10K. As the Weston Prom runs are still in progress, these points have not been included. See below for the current times or positions to beat in the series. The first male home in any race is awarded 35 points, 2nd 34 points etc., all the way down to 10 points for 25th place. If there are more than 25 male runners in a race they will also score 10 points. The first female home in any race is awarded 25 points, 2nd 24 points etc., all the way down to 10 points for 15th place. If there are more than 15 female runners in a race they will also score 10 points. As for last year the best 8 results will count. The difference this year is that if somebody who runs 7 races has more points than somebody who’s run 8 races, they win. So it’s your total points from (up to) eight best performances.
