National Young Athletes Road Relays - April 2005

Westbury Harriers U15 reigning champions were nearly upstaged by
the U13 team, who won silver medals at the start of the day, easily their best
performance of the season. Dan Studley (13:39) came home in 3rd place on the first leg,
a performance which gave him the 5th fastest time of the day, while Robert Galt
(14:14) ran around with Bedfords Sam Clark at the head of the race for the whole of the
2nd leg.

So you're half-way around the second leg of a
National Championship event, and you hit the lead. What do you do?
. . . Get your celebrations in early, of course! |
| The first mile of the 3rd leg saw 3 teams
battling it out for the medals, but with Oli Atchinson running the 2nd
fastest time of the day to win the race for Aldershot F&D, Steve Nash
(13:50) ran through to secure the silver medals for an excited Westbury Harriers
team. |

With 2 members from the trio that won this event last year still in the team,
Westbury Harriers started out as favourites for the U15 National Road Relay
title, but with Harry Webb and Joe Dalgleish having only just recovered from
illness, there was no guarantee that things would go smoothly. |
 |
In the end the
concern was ill-founded, as a fresh looking Webb (12:47) went with the pace on the first
leg, finishing just 14 seconds behind the leader, and Tom Carpenter (12:30) tore back on
the leaders on the second leg, running the fourth fastest time of the day, and
finishing 8 seconds ahead of the pack. |

|
Richard Peters (12:21) never looked like being
caught on the final leg, and strode gracefully to the second fastest time of the
day.
