Dear all

Welcome to the latest issue of e-news!

Just a reminder that the Cotswold Way Relay takes place on Saturday June 26th and I would like to send out a request to runners who would be willing to act as a reserve in the event of one of the team dropping out or are also able to help out with the logistical side of things, in terms of transporting runners from A to B and popping up at opportune moment en route to provide support, do let me know as well! Please contact me via email

The committee would like to send out their thanks to all members who gave donations at the funeral of Peter Griffiths. Also a friendly reminder for marshals at the two remaining Blaise Blazers (first Monday in July and August).

Don't forget to check out the new club website - including the blog section - which we hope to move more of the information from the newsletter to! For example, check out final details of the Boat Trip organized by Clair Cussack there!!!

Member of the Month

Last month's member of the month was Kay Ridgewell, who wins £25 Sweatshop Voucher. Kay has been putting in a lot of work both in front of and behind the scenes, acting as Group Leader and being closely involved in the Blaise Pavillion Committee.

New Members

Quite a few new members to welcome this issue. They are (in no particular order - well actually the order written down and given to me by Sandra!) Rebecaa and Simon Lippett. David Mellings, Shona Mackie, Paull Mooney, Neil Scholes, Maria Scott-Mazzella, Jessica Bates and Rebecca Bidwell. I hope you all have a great time with your running at Westbury!

Club Kit

Up and Running will now be stocking club kit for us! If you need to stock up on any items of "Westbury" kit, or anything else for that matter, do get down there! Remember as a club member you will get a 10% discount on all non-Westbury kit purchased.

Man v. Horse Marathon

Another gloriously hot day in Llanwrtyd Wells and a great day for the Westbury Harriers, as our men won the team competition for the second year in a row at the Man v. Horse marathon. Not to be outdone our late entry ladies got in on the act, finishing 3rd womens relay team (just 2 minutes shy of second place). The main race was won by Haggai Chepkwony of Bristol & West AC in a time of just over 2.17. Sadly for Haggai, the first horse was some 10 minutes faster, meaning the score record goes to 29-2 in favour of the horses! For the Harriers, Rich Collinson was our first runner home, finishing 11th overall in a time of 2.45.59, John Terry was 16th in a time of 2.50.28 and Anthony Glover was 18th in 2.51.58, completing a comfortable victory in the mens team prize competition for the first 3 completing the full 22 mile course! Also running were Colin Johnson who ran 3.06.57, Gareth Howard running 3.19.39 and Martin Thompson 3.36.37. In the relay race our ladies team of Laura Tanna, Jane Thornton and Jane Goodwin were delighted, but somewhat surprised, to win third prize in a time of 3.38.26.

A splendid day out, made all the more memorable thanks to the prize giving featuring the Monster Raving Loony Party's Lord Offa!

Dundry Thunderer TACH Summer Series

With most of our men either injured, or taking a breather pre Man v. Horse, it was left to our ladies to put on a fine show at the second of the summer TACH races. Sophie Voller, marking her recovery from injury with an impressive victory pulled away from 2nd place Aoife Grant (of Bristol University) during the second half of the race. With Wendy Tippett claiming the prize in the V.50 category and strong support from Laura Tanna, Jane Thornton and Jane Goodwin - the ladies claimed the team prize. Sadly for the men - despite 6 being entered for the race - only Graham Bazley completed the course for the Harriers. Indeed more Harriers were spotted marshalling than actually running!

Blaise Blazer

Despite being held exclusively in the summer months, the Blazer has a habit of bringing the weather with it. The first race of 2010 was no exception, as persistent drizzle from late afternoon, turned into heavy rain come the early evening! A fast paced race, fell-running specialist Matt Crane blitz round the course in a time of 21.21 (which must be close to a course record!). Meanwhile, our own Matt Ellis lost his 100% off-road record, despite clocking a time of 22.47 (which would usually win most races). Felix McGrath ran a solid race for 3rd place in 23.09 - an improvement of some 20s from last season!

In the ladies race, Emma D'Alton fought a great battle with Robyn Golding, with Emma prevailing in a time of 25.29, with Robyn just behind in 25.31. 3rd place was Grace Crane who was 30 seconds or so further back.

Also in action for the Harriers were John Terry 23.55, Robin Nash 24.14, Ali Gibson 24.43, Ewan Kilgour 24.44 and Jullian Bailey-Gard Jnr 24.48 (first time under 25 for him!). Then we had Matt van der Velden 26.00, George Thompson 26.18, Ifor Powell 26.21, Peter Murphy 26.56, Sophie Voller 27.05, Paul Fletcher 27.35, Andy Marhsall 27.44 and Tamsin Chick 27.54. Then Jayne Pemple 28.11, Mike Hopkins 28.16, Zoe Dixon 28.22, Evita Gonzales 28.29, Rich Bloss 28.34 and Jullian Bailey-Gard Snr 28.45. And still they kept coming! Sarah Thorne ran 29.04, Chris Studley 29.17, Siana Jones 29.24, James Nort 29.54, Wendy Tippett 30.24, Lisa Griffiths 30.27, Graham Bazley 31.07, James Bardwell 31.12 and Andrew Gibbons 31.25. That's it surely?? Well no - actually Laura Tanna ran 31.41, Mike Harris 31.53, Debbie Fletcher 31.55, Emily Walsh 31.59, Hayley Johnson 32.01, Richard Hughes 32.05, David Baber 32.46, Roger Long 32.58, Glyn Jones 33.44, Sandra Price 34.06, Jane Goodwin 34.26, Helen Kershaw 34.41, David Taylor 34.52, Caroline Potter 34.56, Emma Powell 34.57, Michael Cullum 35.11, Rebecca Lippett 36.15 and Henry Nurser 40.02.

That has to be a record Harriers turnout at a race 50 runners I do believe!

GWR Towpath Race 2

Despite their considerate start time of 7.30pm, the mercury was still showing 25c, as the 2nd GWR Towpath race got under way. In the absence of last month's winner Dave Bird - who claims to have retired following the Edinburgh marathon (I'm sure he'll be back soon!) - the host club's Ben Morley claimed victory in 33.33, holding off Stuart Leaney in 33.49 and team meate Jonathan Hanley in 3rd place in 34.42. In the Ladies race, Emma D'Alton clocked up another win in 37.24, 40s ahead of Robyn Golding in 38.08. GWRs Aileen Brown was 3rd lady in 40.30, with Sophie Voller - returning from injury - 4th in 40.31. Other ladies in action were Emma Powell running 52.12, Kay Ridgwell 54.42, Caroline Scapens 60.15 and Tracey Bain 65.01.

For Westbury's men, Gregg Ward finished 13th in 37.47, Bob Pringle 39.21, Alex Miller 39.49, Andrew Yuill in 42.20. Tim Synge ran 43.41, Mike Harris 43.45, Julian Wilson 46.41, James Bardwell 46.49, Roger Long 48.21, Andrew Gibbons 48.29, Mike Callum ran 51.36 and David Nash 54.22.

Sri Chinmoy 5k

A great turn out last night for the Sri Chinmoy 5k at Eastville Park. The race itself was won by Jonathan Goodland of GWR / Bristol & West in a time of 18.18. Westbury Harriers were well represented with Alasdair Gibson finishing 3rd in 18.41 (a good time over an undulating 3 lap circuit). Ray Hooper finished 6th in 19.13, with Evita Gonzales claiming 2nd lady in a time of 21.40, just 11 seconds behind the winner, Portishead's Laura Croker. Mike Harris ran 22.24, Kay Ridgewell 26.23 and Eithne Noonan 28.07 to complete the Harriers turn out!

Black Horse Dash

Matt Ellis kept his great season going with victory in last night's Black Horse Dash. Former Westbury Harrier, Simon Everington was 2nd, just 20 seconds behind, with TACH's Rob Hicks 3rd. Sadly no full results have appeared thus far!

Bridge Inn 5k

This time at the Bridge Inn, Debbie Marsden clocked up her 4th win of the season over the 5k distance, clocking a time of 17.34. Emma D'Alton was hot on her heels mind, with a big PB of 17.48. In the mens race, Anthony Glover finished 9th in 17.02, with Colin Johnson running 18.28, Bob Pringle 18.28, Steve Hawes 18.32 and Graham Clark 18.50. Also in action was Sophie Voller, returning from injury, ran 19.24, Tony Jefferies 19.53, Debbie Cleary 20.13 and John Pringle 23.23.

Edinburgh Marathon / Half Marathon

Anthony Ballance produced a classy debut over the marathon distance, as he defied sweltering heat at the Edinburgh Marathon to secure a time of 2.57.16. To debut at the marathon distance in sub 3 is an excellent effort and one of which Anthony can rightly be proud. Lindsay Hall made her half marathon debut and ran 2.06.57 - a sub 2 on the cards come the autumn I would think!

Training

Chris Elson will be running his usual sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the coming weeks! These sessions have been instrumental in some of the great improvements we have been witnessing in our men and ladies over the past few months! As the nights are now lighter, we will be making more use of Stoke Lodge for interval sessions! Do get in touch with me, if you would like to be added to Chris' email list to be kept up to date with events!

Race Calendar

Here is a list of forthcoming events where I am aware of Westbury participation (or where Westbury runners can 'easily' get to!) bold indicates a club championship event. I have put in brackets where I am aware of there being a team prize associated with the race.
