Dear all
The Cotswold Way Relay takes place on Saturday June 26th and I would like to send out a request to runners who would be willing to act as a reserve in the event of one of the team dropping out - currently the squad consists of Matt Ellis, John Terry, Debbie Marsden, Chris Palmer, Colin Johnson, Vicky Plume, Dan Studley, Anthony Glover, Emma D'Alton and Robyn Golding. If you are also able to help out with the logistical side of things, in terms of transporting runners from A to B and popping up at opportune moment en route to provide support, do let me know as well!
Don't forget there is going to be a large contingent of Harriers heading to Llanwrtyd Wells to participate in this years Man v. Horse Marathon - details of how to enter are in the link in the race section. There is a basic campsite in the village, which charges £5 a night (if they remember)
Finally the Black Horse Dash is actually running this year (and takes place on Thursday) - however, it has been removed from the club championships and replaced by the Beacon Batch as it was looking unlikely to take place until recently.
Club Kit
Up and Running will now be stocking club kit for us! If you need to stock up on any items of "Westbury" kit, or anything else for that matter, do get down there! Remember as a club member you will get a 10% discount on all non-Westbury kit purchased.
Race Results
Long Ashton 10k
Results in from the Long Ashton 10k, showed a large turnout from the Harriers - 14 from 129 - as Adam Kula was first man home in a time of 39.10 on what was described as a 'challenging' course! Robyn Golding was 2nd lady home in a time of 40.23, with Sophie Voller 3rd in 43.33 and Tamsin Chick 4th in 44.23. Back to the gents and Craig MacPherson finished 11th in a time of 41.15. Debbie Cleary was 5th lady home in 45.03, closely followed by Aidan Naughton in 45.13 (33rd) and Mike Harris 46.07 (38th). Sarah Thorne was next home in 46.15, Paul Fletcher 46.27, Alex O'Keefe 50.02, David Taylor 52.45, Hayley Dunstan 58.31 and Helen Kula 1.03.44.
Wrington Woodland Run
The first of TACHs summer series took place on Thursday, with the Wrington Woodland Race. Our lads didn't disappoint, as Matt Ellis (37.19), Gregg Ward (37.56) and John Terry (38.16) combined to finish 1st 2nd and 3rd! Unfortunately for them all the other men at the club had dropped out of the race, and with 4 runners needed for the team prize, it was looking bleak!
For the ladies, Wendy Tippett was first home and won the V.50 category in a time of 49.35, Laura Tanna ran 55.23, Jane Goodwin 56.08 and Jane Thornton 58.49.
When it came to the presentation, a mistake by the organizers gave the Harriers a 4th male runner, and with 1-2-3 it was enough to secure the team prize! We'll have to give it back next time!
GWR Towpath 10k
The first of the summer towpath races was won by the unattached Dave Bird, who ran a solo race start to finish - obtaining 31.59. For the Harriers, Emma D'Alton was our first competitor home (7th overall!), winning the ladies race in 37.06; just holding off Robyn Golding who was 10th in 37.27. Alex Miller ran a great time, knocking 40s off his PB, to run 37.57. Graham Clark was 18th in 38.48.
Andrew Yuill was next home, 48th in 41.56, Aidan Naughton ran 43.06, Matthew Lett-Charnock ran 44.53 and James Bardwell 46.21. Then we had Richard Hughes ran 47.23, Andrew Gibbons 47.27, Roger Long 48.25, David Taylor 50.12 and Emma Powell 50.59. Kay Ridgewell ran 55.33, Tracey Bain 59.56, Caroline Scapens 59.57 and Shelley Presland in 1.04.38.
Well done all!
Bristol 10k
A massive Harriers turn out at the Bristol 10k today! The 3rd running of the Bristol event saw over 10,000 runners take part and 11 sub-30 minute times, as it incorporated the UK 10k championships and an inter-area match as well! In the inter area match, the club had 2 representatives for the Midlands team - Sam Dalgleish for the men and Debbie Marsden in the ladies race.
The winning time of 28.29 was a new course record for Gordon Mugi, with Moumin Geele (of Newham and Essex Beagles) 2nd in 29.05. First home for the Harriers was Sam Dalgleish who finished 52 in 32.50, followed by Chris Palmer in 35.12, one place ahead of new boy Craig MacPherson who ran a cracking PB of 35.20 whilst Robin Nash, returning from injury, ran 35.37.
Debbie Marsden was the first lady home for the Harriers running 36.36, who finished just ahead of Anthony Ballance who ran a new PB of 36.48. Another new member Steve Hawes, ran 37.52 (not bad for a rugby forward ;-) ) with Colin Johnson 38.38, just ahead of Neil Scholes who ran 38.43. Graham Clark ran 39.01, followed by Ian Ruck (taking part in the business challenge), who posted a new PB of 39.06. He was shortly followed by Geraint Torrington, who also ran a big PB of 39.13. Dan Studley, struggled with his breakfast, and finished in 39.35, Charles Hobbs in 40.23, Keith Hill in 40.38, Steven Main 41.44, Mike Harris 42.09 and Zoe Dixon 42.19.
Just outside the top 500, Vicky Jones ran 42.26, while Katie Synge (43.16) outsprinted dad Tim (43.45), whilst Nick Marshall finished between them in a time of 43.20. Siana Jones was next home in 43.33, Lizzy Smith finished 738th in a time of 44.00, ahead of Jennifer Corbett in 44.54, Julian Wilson 45.15 and Kelly Winstone 46.17. Then it was Judy Knights in 47.13, Graham Bazley in 47.27, Beth Scholes in 47.35, Richard Hughes 48.43. Andrew Parsonage ran 49.32, Katie Moore 50.22, James Bertham 51.57, Sandra Sforza 54.26 and Myriam Camboulives 54.51. Diane Heys ran 56.14, Anthony Bird 56.59, Lindsay Hall in 57.08, Gemma Gardner in 59.24, Henry Nurser 59.34, Lauren Ratcliffe 59.46.
Just over the hour we had Sarah Lawes 1.00.23, Susan King 1.00.42, Sandra Maddock 1.01.34, Sarah Smith 1.03.36 and Kirsty Burns 1.10.39.
Great times from all!!!
Tewkesbury Half Marathon
They say a week is a long time in politics, but two weeks is nothing in running! Undaunted by running a sub 3 hr marathon at London and seemingly unbowed by running a PB in the Towpath 10k on Friday, Emma D'Alton headed up the M5 to Tewkesbury, where she ran a new half marathon PB of 1.20.42 - winning the ladies race and finishing 14th overall out of 1100 runners! Alex O'Keefe was also representing the Harriers and he got round in a time of 1.43.02.
Well done guys!
Halstead and Essex Marathon
Not satisfied with her performance at London a mere two weeks earlier, Laura Tanna headed over to Essex to take part in the Halstead Marathon. Hopefully she'll be a lot happier with this performance - clocking up a time of 3.48.18 - a great time over an undulating course through the Essex countryside.
Bitton 5k
The first of the Bitton 5k summer series races took place, with Chris Palmer leading the way for Westbury with a well earned 6th place in 16.57. One place further back saw Jullian Bailey-Gard Jnr who finished in 17.47. Roger Long finished 52nd in 23.26, Jane Thornton 61st in 24.53, Richard Hughes 62nd in the same time, Eirian Thornton 64th in 25.24 and Sandra Bailey-Gard finished 71st in 29.54.
Well done all!
Keynsham 10k
Just 4 Harriers were brave enough to take part in this hilly local 10k. Richard Hughes was first home in 51.45, closely followed by Clair Cusack in 52.19. Next home were Simon and Rebecca Lippett both in a time of 59.30 - well done!
Hogweed Trot 10k
Debbie Marsden continued her great season with a new PB over 10k of 36.12, as she finished 3rd overall in the Hogweed Trot 10k. Close behind her was Emma D'Alton who also set a PB, breaking 37 minutes for the first time, finishing in 36.48. In the mens race, Anthony Glover, running for the host club 2nd claim, finished in 2nd place in a time of 35.30. Meanwhile racing legend Roger Long finished in a time of 48.36, David Taylor in 50.27 and Linda O'Shaughnessy in 53.08.
Well done everybody!
Weston Prom Run
The final prom run of the 2009/10 series saw Westbury's Mens Team retain their title for the 3rd successive year. This season they were pushed hard by Clevedon AC, but thanks to a great 4th spot from Gregg Ward (running a 5m PB) and with strong support from Alex Miller, Phil Court and Jullian Bailey-Gard Snr, victory was all theres! The team also consisted of John Terry and Graham Clark, who both contributed useful points to the total throughout the season - indeed John finished 2nd senior man overall in the series, behind GWRs Ben Morley, who won pretty much every race of the series! Gregg Ward was 3rd Senior Man in the series, where your best 6 performances count.
Despite yet another new course - this one a hilly out and back in the opposite direction to the prom - Matt Ellis scored another 2nd place, in a new PB of 27.31. He was pushed hard by Gregg Ward who also scored a PB in 28.14. David Hobbs was 15th in 30.10, Alex Miller 17th in 30.40 (possibly also a PB(?)), Geraint Torrington 31.29, definitely a PB, Phil Court 41st in 32.56, Keith Hill 43rd in 33.03, Jullian Bailey-Gard Snr 62nd in 34.01. For the ladies, Tamsin Chick ran 34.26, with Debbie Cleary hot on her heels in 34.44. Not far behind was Evita Gonzalez in 35.47 and Isabel Duckworth in 36.35. Andrew Gibbons ran 37.42, Roger Long 38.19, Jane Goodwin 39.40, Jane Thornton 41.42, Richard Hughes 43.36, Kay Ridgwell 43.49, Caroline Scapens 48.07 and Sandra Bailey-Gard 51.42.
Great running all!
Training
Chris Elson will be running his usual sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the coming weeks! These sessions have been instrumental in some of the great improvements we have been witnessing in our men and ladies over the past few months! As the nights are now lighter, we will be making more use of Stoke Lodge for interval sessions! Do get in touch with me, if you would like to be added to Chris' email list to be kept up to date with events!
Race Calendar
Here is a list of forthcoming events where I am aware of Westbury participation (or where Westbury runners can 'easily' get to!) bold indicates a club championship event. I have put in brackets where I am aware of there being a team prize associated with the race. I am happy to co-ordinate runners who might be thinking about doing races where prizes are up for grabs to ensure we have sufficient numbers taking part!
