Dear all

Welcome to the latest issue of e-news!

Lots to report on this issue, including a corrected version of events from the Frenchay 10k a couple of weeks back. Unfortunately the organizers pointed this years race to last years results, meaning a slightly inaccurate report on the race! Also we have a report from the London Marathon - where 3 Harriers broke the 3 hour mark, including Emma D'Alton, who finished 27th overall in the UKA championship event!

This week sees the first of the summer TACH runs and with 15 Harriers listed as entered, it promises to be a good night out! The first towpath run is on Friday and then the Bristol 10k provides the focal point of this weekend. Plenty of running going on here!

Mainly to help me keep abreast of all the events Harriers runners are involved in, but also to give more general information about running in the Bristol area, I now have a blog located at:

http://runninginbristol.blogspot.com/

So if you want to get your race reports early - check it out!

The AGM was held last Monday (26th April) various issues were raised. Once the minutes I'll out, I will attempt to summarise!

Club Kit

Up and Running will now be stocking club kit for us! If you need to stock up on any items of "Westbury" kit, or anything else for that matter, do get down there! Remember as a club member you will get a 10% discount on all non-Westbury kit purchased.

Race Results

Great Welsh Marathon

An intrepid Harrier, Keith Hill, took the journey over to Llanelli for the first "Great Welsh Marathon". He didn't disappoint either, finishing 24th in a time of 3.14.01 - qualifying him for automatic entry into London next year if he so desires! Keith asked me to thank the Saturday morning WT group for providing the impetus to his training!

London Marathon

A big congratulations to all the Harriers who took part in last weekend's London Marathon. Some great achievements on the day, including 3 sub 3 hour performances. First home for the club was Matt Ellis, who ran a consistent pace to finish in a time of 2.51.25 - knocking 4 minutes off his time from Paris last year. Next home was John Collier, who pre race was planning for a crack at sub 2.30. All seemed to be going to plan with the first half reached in 1.15.47, but a stress fracture to his shin caused him to slow right down - amazingly he still finished in a time of 2.52.04.

First lady home was Emma D'Alton, who ran her first sub 3 hour marathon, finishing in a time of 2.56.54. This was an improvement of some 13 minutes, on her time from Edinburgh last year. Next home Colin Johnson, who got agonisingly close to the 3 hour mark, unfortunately tiring in the final few miles finishing in 3.04.39. Hamid Khan was very close behind in 3.06.19 and Graham Clark just sneaked in under 3.10 - 3.09.39. Congrats to all the men who have earned GFA entries into next year's event!

Edd Gould ran an excellent marathon finishing in 3.15.38, Tim Synge ran 3.26.56, Nick Marshall 3.43.02 and Aidan Naughton 3.55.54. Next home was Gill Jones, just outside of 4 hours, running 4.01.03. Laura Tanna ran 4.06.42, with Jane Goodwin close behind in 4.17.37, Simon Gardiner in 4.22.05, Jane Thornton in 4.22.45, Robert Hawkins in 4.36.46 and Lizzy Meadows in 4.54.15.

Well done to you all!

Frenchay 10k

Try again! The 2010 edition of the Frenchay 10k, saw 15 Harriers take part. First home (in 11th overall) was Terry Jewell-Davies, who just held off the challenge of Anthony Glover - both given the time of 39.47. Ray Hooper was 20th in a time of 40.32, with Tyrone James running 41.10. Lizzy Smith was first lady home for the club, finishing in a time of 44.44, with Richard Woodruff 60th in 45.04. Nick Taylor ran 46.08, whilst Alex O'Keefe ran 49.54. Graham Bazley 52.48, Roger Long 54.21, Andrew Gibbons 54.49, Anneke Bull 56.52 and Emma Powell 56.59 were the next runners home for the Harriers. Diane Heys ran 1.00.41 and Kate Nicholls rounded off the action in 1.04.30!

Bridge Inn 5k

The Bridge Inn returned for its summer series, with Allister Sheffield once again prevailing in a time of 15.46. This time he was given a run for his money by the University's David Green who finished just a second behind him. Bristol & West's Phil Parry was third in 16.00 dead. In the ladies race, our own Debbie Marsden had a humdinger of a battle with Severn's Johanna Fletcher, with Marsden prevailing in a new PB of 17.34, 2 seconds ahead of Fletcher, who is preparing for next week's Prague Marathon.

Meanwhile for the Harriers, Gregg Ward showed he continues to run well, with 10th place in 16.59, Anthony Glover, returning from injury, ran 17.07. The 14 yr old Kane Lee ran a new PB of 17.10 and we look forward to his continued improvement over the summer months. Talking of improvement, Malc White ducked under 18 minutes with 17.57, Bob Pringle in 18.28 and Alex Miller in 18.35 - all running well! Tony Jefferies finished 2nd V60 in 20.03, Roger Long ran 23.31 and Richard Hughes 24.06

Great running all!

Glastonbury "Round the Tor" 10k

A bank holiday weekend, so of course the weather was dreadful. Fortunately the heavy rain abated just prior to the 11.40 start time for the 29th Glastonbury Road Run. With cash prizes for winning and for setting a new course record, the race attracted some of the quick boys and girls out. Indeed, both mens and ladies course records were broken. In the ladies race, our own Debbie Marsden set a new PB and took over a minute off the course record, running 36.15!

Despite being a club championship event, and with lots of cash on offer, it failed to attract a big turn out from Westbury with just 8 Harriers on display. Gregg Ward was first home, just breaking the 36 (35.55) minute barrier on a testing course. John Terry ran 36.40 and Jullian Bailey-Gard Jnr (37.56) also broke 40 minutes. Next home was the Snr version of the Jullian Bailey-Gard variety, with Roger Long, just holding off Richard Hughes. Sandra Bailey-Gard was the final Harrier home.

No results yet for Long Ashton - but I understand our ladies did well with Robyn, Sophie and Tamsin finishing 2nd 3rd and 4th respectively!

Training

Chris Elson will be running his usual sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the coming weeks! These sessions have been instrumental in some of the great improvements we have been witnessing in our men and ladies over the past few months! As the nights are now lighter, we will be making more use of Stoke Lodge for interval sessions! Do get in touch with me, if you would like to be added to Chris' email list to be kept up to date with events!

Race Calendar

Here is a list of forthcoming events where I am aware of Westbury participation (or where Westbury runners can 'easily' get to!) bold indicates a club championship event. I have put in brackets where I am aware of there being a team prize associated with the race. I am happy to co-ordinate runners who might be thinking about doing races where prizes are up for grabs to ensure we have sufficient numbers taking part!
